The study aimed at preservation guidelines for Bugema University Library. The objective that guided the project study were; to determine the information materials in Bugema University Library and the extent to which students and university staff utilize these materials, to establish the current preservation practices at Bugema University library, and to develop preservation
guidelines for Bugema University library. The study used a case study research design while adopting a qualitative research approach; the project team was working with a population of 80 respondents, a sample size comprised 66 respondents. The respondents were selected using the purposive sampling method, and the project team used interview, observation, and document analysis as data collection methods. The ethical consideration included giving a participant a right to withdraw from the research any time they feel, letting the respondents participate voluntarily, protecting respondent’s identity, and being confident and honest. Bugema University Library’s collection includes; books, magazines, journals, newspapers, encyclopedias, maps, and databases. The findings also indicated that the causes of deterioration of information materials at Bugema University were; biological agents, temperature, dirt and dust, and poor handling of information materials by the users. The current preservation practices used include; digitization, microfilming, and dusting. It was stated that the university faces challenges in an attempt to preserve materials, such as; a lack of preservation policy, inadequate funds, and inadequate man power and infrastructures. They also noted that there are preservation guidelines like; developing a preservation plan, funding, and obtaining copyright clearance of different materials. The study recommends that Bugema University can allocate enough funds to the library section, recruit professional librarians, and should train librarians and users on how to use modern techniques to preserve information materials in the library
