Assessing people’s attitude and perception towards domestic solid waste management practices at the disposal site and households, A case of Koboko Municipality

Abstract

Effective domestic waste management practices are vital for achieving sustainable and environmentally friendly communities. Understanding the attitudes and perceptions of individuals towards waste management is crucial for implementing successful strategies and bring about positive change. This abstract represents a comprehensive overview of research conducted to assess people’s attitudes and perception towards domestic waste management practices The study employed a mixed method approach combining both quantitative and qualitative interviews to capture a holistic understanding of the people’s opinions. A representative sample of households from a diverse socio- demographic backgrounds was selected to minimize being bias. The data was collected through measurements, questionnaires and interview guide. The questionnaires were used to obtain the people’s attitudes and perception towards domestic waste management practices. The data was analyzed using excel and statistical package for social sciences. The research study showed that 75% of the respondents were aware about the domestic waste management practices and 25% of the respondents were not aware of the waste management practices. The findings show that most of the waste generated from the household was food/organic waste represented by 42.5% as shown in figure 4 below of which few famers composite them while the majority end up being disposed into the open dump. So, there is need to manage wastes generated properly which will help to reduce or avoid the risk to human health and the environment. Based on the findings, the study recommends on the construction of a modern landfill and treatment plant, carrying out environmental programs, community participation and education.
