Knowledge, attitudes and challenges of health professionals towards pain management among cancer patients at Uganda cancer institute

Abstract

Introduction The study was conducted to assess Knowledge, attitudes and practices of health professionals towards pain management among patients at Uganda cancer institute Objectives of the study The main objectives of the study were: To establish the level of knowledge of health professionals towards pain management among patients at Uganda cancer institute To assess the attitude of health professionals towards pain management among patients at Uganda cancer institute To identify the practices of health professionals in pain management among patients at Uganda cancer institute. Results Data was collected using a combination of quantitative and qualitative methodologies. The tools that were used for data collection were questionnaire, in-depth interviews. Data was collected from health professionals towards pain management among patients at Uganda cancer institute The study found that 98% of the respondents had knowledge towards pain management is concern. Findings also revealed that knowledge is necessary towards pain management and pain can be relieved from patients. The study results further raveled that 96% of the respondents said that the use of assessment tool is best way to determine the patient pain and can be relieved once assessed. Conclusion According to the study it is concluded that health professional’s knowledge, attitudes and practices towards pain management is influenced by education, experience and motivation. Knowledge and awareness of pain management is necessarily and can reduce pain as a preventive strategy for pain. Recommendation health professionals (health workers) should be explored with the knowledge of pain among the patients admitted to their unit.
