Challenges related to newcastle disease vaccination among layer chicken in Nyendo Mukungwe division Masaka city

Abstract

Newcastle disease (NCD) is a devastating viral disease of poultry caused by different strains of Avian Paramyxovirus-1. The aim of the study was to assess challenges related to Newcastle disease vaccination among layers in Nyendo Mukungwe Division, Masaka City. A cross sectional study was carried out by interviewing layer farmers and key informants using an open and close ended questionnaire. Major findings indicated laxity in following Newcastle disease vaccination beyond given schedules by chick suppliers where (n=41, 95.1%) do not practice it. There was poor disposal of residual vaccine where (n=41, 36.4%) discard it in the environment. Tap water was the mostly used for vaccine administration in drinking water followed by rain water then underground water (n=41, 70.7%, 22.0%, 7.3%) respectively. Vaccine cold chain was observed during transportation of the vaccines where (n=41, 75.6%) used polythene bags with ice packs and (n=41, 21.4%) used cool boxes. The major challenges related to NCD were mortality and drop in egg production (n=41, 47.0%, 41.2%) respectively. This study provides an insight into the gaps that could contribute to NCD outbreaks in Nyendo Mukungwe division Masaka city. Thus, the study recommends a further in-depth investigation in form of a Knowledge, Attitudes and Practices approach as regards NCD occurrences in this area.
