dc.description.abstract | The development of Green Cities means establishment of an integrated system that places
paramount importance on embracing continuous change, adaptation, and learning, with the
overarching goal of enhancing citizens' quality of life while safeguarding the needs of future
generations. However, the potential hindrances posed by industrialization, population growth, and
resource exploitation underscore the importance of adhering to sustainable guidelines. In the
specific context of Uganda, the alignment of past and present city development efforts with green
city principles remains unclear, demanding a comprehensive assessment of challenges and the
formulation of effective strategies to steer future development towards the attainment of green city
status. The present study aimed at Enhancing Green City Development in Namanve Industrial
Park, Mukono District, Uganda with the objectives, i) To ascertain the requirements for developing
a Green City, ii) To assess whether the current and past efforts are in line with the requirements
for developing a Green City, iii) To assess the challenges in meeting the requirements for
developing a Green City, iv) To identify strategies to guide the developments efforts towards
attainment of a green city status. The study was conducted in Namanve industrial and data was
collected from 50 respondents who were randomly selected. The data was analyzed using both
descriptive statistics. From the research findings, the requirements for the development of a Green
City were urban forestry, green infrastructure, use of efficient energy and the past and current
initiatives for developing a Green City which included planting trees along roads and streets,
harnessing energy from waste systems, recycling bottles, papers, and polythene bags, and the
construction of drainage systems are paramount to the development of a Green City Park.
The most prevalent challenge in meeting the requirements for developing Namanve as a Green
city park were; rapid urbanization and high population densities, governmental policy amendments
that experience delays, and poor waste disposal practices. The main strategies and actions to guide
development efforts towards achieving Green City status included raising awareness and nurturing
a sense of responsibility within the community, sensitizing people about proper waste disposal
practices, and promoting the use of eco-friendly energy sources. Based on the primary conclusions
drawn from this study, it is recommended that urban development efforts aiming to establish a
Green City should prioritize the integration of essential elements such as urban forests, public
green spaces, efficient solid waste management, environmentally conscious urban planning, and
robust urban green infrastructures. However, the realization of a Green City is not without its challenges. To ensure the realization of
these recommendations, a series of concrete steps are essential. Stakeholder collaboration,
spanning government bodies, NGOs, businesses, and local communities, amplifies collective
expertise and resources. Rigorous policy formulation, coupled with attractive incentives, provides
the regulatory and financial framework necessary for effective implementation. | en_US |
