THE INFLUENCE OF SECOND-HAND CLOTHING TRADE ON THE FASHION AND TEXTILE INDUSTRY IN EAST AFRICA

Abstract

The research analyses the second-hand clothing trade and shows how it has impacted the growing fashion and textile industry in Uganda. The research was based on the emergence of a stronger generation of a stronger fashion and textile industry in Uganda where we see the fashion and textile industry of Uganda beginning to gain international recognition. The research also looked into finding a means in which the native fashion and textile industries could gain the consumer favourite position whereby the Ugandans preferred to wear the first hand clothing made in Uganda than opting for already worn clothing that would be imported into the country. The research looked into devising strategies in which the growing fashion and textile industry could coexist and compete favourably with the second-hand clothing industry despite the fact that the second-hand clothing industry has already gained monopoly of the clothing trade in Uganda and Sub-Saharan Africa at large. The research shows the background of second-hand clothing in Uganda and how it came to become a monopoly in the clothing trade industry in Uganda and then goes ahead to show how the growing fashion and textile industry is going to attain a firm and solid foundation so that it can meet the consumer interests of the Ugandans.
