Assessing the effects of industrial pollution on the environment in Namanve industrial area, Mukono district.
Abstract
Industrialisation in Namanve area has come with heavy impacts that affect the whole environment that is, water, land and air. Different parts of the environment have been affected differently like the soil, air and water quality and also the people settling in that area. The objectives of this study were to: (1) determine the types of pollutants emitted by industries in Namanve industrial area; (2) identify the measures taken by industries and the government to mitigate the impact of industrial pollution in Namanve industrial area; (3) determine the effects of industrial pollution on health of local communities in Namanve industrial area. The study employed a cross-sectional survey. A questionnaire was administered to 71 respondents. Three key informant interviews were also conducted to collect qualitative data.
The biggest proportion of respondents in this area agreed that public participation is vital to preventing and controlling pollution in this area, however they claimed that the government has not done enough in solving this problem.
Enhancing existing pollution control laws and regulations together with its respective standards will provide the best legal foundation for addressing industrial pollution. Strict enforcement mechanisms, rewards and penalties can control industrial emissions, thereby ensuring that emissions, waste disposal, and other pollution-related activities adhere to established guidelines. Ensuring that industries practice cleaner production and emphasizing public collaboration towards pollution control is the major way to overcome pollution problem.
