The contribution of Echinochloa Pyramidalis to the people living around Lubigi wetland in Wakiso district.

Abstract

The study's main goal was to determine the contribution of Echinochloa pyramidalis to the livelihoods of communities living near Lubigi wetland in Wakiso. Other objectives were ;To characterize the primary beneficiaries from pasture harvesting in Lubigi wetland, estimate the rate of pasture harvesting from Lubigi wetland, And assess the economic benefits from pasture harvesting in Lubigi wetland. The study employed a combination of experimental and cross-section survey approach. The study revealed that the average age of the harvesters was 31.20 years with a minimum of 22 and a maximum of 63 years old. More males where involved in the harvesting of pasture. The pasture harvesters came 5 areas of residence with the majority coming from Gand. The study revealed that most people collecting pasture from Lubigi wetland are generally unemployed and hence have no permanent job. Most of the people involved in harvesting this pasture hadn’t attained any formal education; hence this activity offers them a chance of living. Most of the primary buyers of the pastures harvested where the zero grazers. The economic significance of Echnichloa pyramidalis is of great importance . The species has been shown to generate income for local residents by directly selling its products or indirectly by supporting other income-generating activities. Engaging local communities in conservation efforts by promoting community based initiative about the economic importance of Echnichloa pyramidalis and encouraging them to actively participate.
