Assessing challenges facing urban agriculture in Sheema district.

Abstract

This study is aimed to evaluate the obstacles confronting urban agriculture in Sheema district. Utilizing a cross-sectional research, design, the collected data through a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods. To answer questions related to the types of crops and animal species maintained by urban farmers, farming techniques employed by them , and assessing the contributions of urban farming to the livelihood of farmers. The findings unveiled that various practices were adopted by farmers ranging from backyard gardening to vertical farming. These benefited the farmers' diverse strategies for food income and green sustainability. Management practices covered both crops and livestock, like rotational grazing and proper nutrition for animals. Crop practices include weeding, pruning, fertilization, mulching and more. Challenges included costly veterinary services and urbanization limiting Agricultural space. Urban agriculture brings environmental, social and economic benefits but transportation issues and market competition affect farmers' income .The study recommends, to support diverse practices that promote urban agriculture enhancing the well-being of urban farmers and the broader community while addressing the challenges identified in the study.
