Relationship between the social environment and participation in physical activity among Secondary School students in Nansana Municipality Uganda

Abstract

This study was aimed at finding out the relationship between social environmental factors and physical activity among secondary School students in Nansana Municipality and was carried out from 2 Secondary schools with Nansana. A descriptive cross-sectional study design was employed, and 245 students were given questionnaires while 218 met the criterion of 13-15 years of age with a response rate of 89%. After collecting data using the questionnaires, it was analyzed using Microsoft Excel, frequencies and findings presented in tables and pie charts. The study established that 83.9% of the students engaged in moderate intensity activities for at least more than 10 minutes, 42.7% of them met the recommended MVPA of an average of 60 minutes daily for children and youth aged 6-17 years. The study also concluded that there was a relationship between the social environmental factors and physical activity among high school students following 7 different aspects that were assessed.
