The quality of hides and skins plays a significant role in the leather industry. Defects on hides and skins can result in reduced value and marketability of leather products. The study aimed at assessing the major causes of defects on animal hides and skins, identify common pre and post slaughter defects, and evaluate farmers' opinion to adopt measures for the reduction and control of poor hides and skins in Wadelai Sub-County, Pakwach District. The study employed a survey design, collecting data through interviews with livestock stakeholders, including farmers and butchers in the study area. Demographic characteristics, causes of defects, and farmers' opinion to adopt measures were assessed. The data were analyzed, and frequencies and percentages were calculated to determine the key findings. The study found that ectoparasites, primarily ticks (91.7%), were identified as the major cause of defects on animal hides and skins. Other significant factors included thorns, beating, and skin diseases. The most common pre and post slaughter defects were beating marks, ear notching, barbed wire scratches, thorn scratches, restrained log marks, and poor brands. Farmers showed a high opinion to adopt measures such as regular spraying of animals to control ticks but a low opinion to stop using sharps/whips when handling animals. The findings highlight the importance of effective tick control measures, proper animal handling techniques, and raising awareness about humane handling practices among farmers to improve the quality of hides and skins. The study provides insights into the demographic characteristics of livestock stakeholders and identifies specific measures that can be implemented to reduce defects on hides and skins. The results align with previous studies conducted in similar contexts, emphasizing the need for targeted interventions, education, training, and collaboration among stakeholders. This study underscores the critical role of addressing causes and implementing measures to reduce defects on hides and skins. Implementing effective tick control measures, promoting proper animal handling practices, conducting awareness campaigns, providing training and fostering collaboration among relevant stakeholders. Further research and development efforts are encouraged to identify innovative approaches for defect reduction and enhance the overall quality of hides and skins in the study area.en_US
