The project aimed at developing a children’s reading programme for Naguru Remand Home in Nakawa Division, Kampala, Uganda. The objectives were to examine the existing reading programmes at Naguru Remand Home, to identify the requirements for a children’s reading programme, design a children’s reading programme and to implement a children’s reading programme for Naguru Remand Home. The Children’s Reading Programme for Naguru Remand Home aims to foster a love for reading among children. It recognises the transformative power of reading in providing children with new vocabulary, improved communication skills, emotional well-being and rehabilitation. The project employed a qualitative approach whereby interviews and observation methods were used to gather participants’ perceptions and understanding of a children’s reading programme. Purposive sampling method was used to select the sample size of 12 participants which included 2 staff members and 10 children. By providing access to diverse reading materials and implementing engaging activities such as storytelling, silent reading, book clubs, reading buddies, and read-aloud, we aimed to create a supportive and stimulating reading environment within the Remand Home. The findings indicated that there was a great need for a children’s reading programme since participants actively got involved the reading sessions willingly during the implementation stage. The project recommended allocation of more funds to acquire reading materials and recruit expertise, inclusive design to cater to different reading levels, collaboration with stakeholders to garner support, and regular monitoring and evaluation to track progress and gather feedback.en_US
