Stakeholders along the pig–product value chain in selected divisions of Hoima City
Abstract
Pig production is one of the fastest growing livestock sectors worldwide and this trend is expected to continue over the coming years Uganda is currently experiencing a rise in demand for pork in both domestic (urban and peri-urban areas, mainly through informal roadside butcheries pork eateries) and regional markets. The study assessed the stakeholders along the pig-product value chain in Hoima city. The study was involved 100 stakeholders along the pig-product value chain who were interviewed using a pretested questionnaire. Purposive and random sampling methods were used in selecting of respondents in this study. Descriptive statistics, which included frequencies, means and percentages, were carried out using SPSS. The results indicated that key players in the pig product value chain in Hoima city included; farmers (43%), consumers (34%), pork joint operators (23%), Farmers reared mainly local breeds (62.9%), using subsistence (57.1), systems of rearing. Key products were raw pork, roasted pork and fried pork. Most of the consumers demanded for all the pork products. However, the highly demanded pork product was raw pork. Additionally, female consumers demanded for more raw pork while male consumers demanded more for already prepared pork, which included roasted or fried pork.
