Literacy is seen as a key learning tool for knowledge, skills, values and attitudes required for human beings to develop their capacities and to participate fully in development. This research report addresses the influence of literacy levels on poverty in Eastern Uganda and it focuses on the following objectives; to investigate the relationship between level of education and poverty, to examine the relationship between marital status and poverty, to assess the relationship between age and poverty and to investigate the relationship between sex and poverty in Eastern Uganda. This research study is a correlation cross-selection study and quantitative research method was used. Secondary data was obtained for this research study and it was the UNHS dataset that was collected in 2016 and was obtained from UBOS. The data was already entered in Stata statistical software package and the data was quantitative. The weaknesses in the sample to be used were; some of the variables were similar thus the researcher took time determining what variables to assess and also most of the variables had missing data. The results showed that people who had never attended school in the past were more likely to be poor compared to those who were currently attending school, widows were more likely to be poor compared to those who were married monogamous, the females were more likely to be poor compared to the males, People who were below 18 years of age were more likely to be poor compared to those who were 18-64years of age whereas those who were 65 years of age and above were less likely to be poor compared to those who were 18-64 years of age. Basing on the above evidence, the research, therefore, concluded that literacy levels greatly influence poverty in Eastern Uganda. The researcher then recommends that people in Eastern Uganda should be encouraged to carry out family planning because results showed that majority of the people were below 18 years of age and also employment opportunities should be created for the people in Eastern Uganda in order to reduce poverty.
