dc.description.abstractABSTRACT This research will study the influence of parent’s socio-economic status and educational background on their children’s education in Rukungiri. The study reviews literature on how socio-economic status of the parents affects the education of their children; examine the role of parents‟ socio-economic status and their educational background on the Educational process of their children. Students’ academic achievement and educational attainment have been studied within different frameworks. Many of them have a focus on parents’ education, occupation or home background (like; family income, language of the home, activities of the family and work methods), while other studies looked at it from the teachers‟ variables (such as teacher’s age, experience, education, gender), school variables (such as environment, structures, buildings, location), students’ variables (such as attitude, self-concept, self-esteem, study habit, interest) or parents’ support (such as achievement motivation of wards, parental attitudes towards education, the aspiration of parents). There is evidence that parents’ social economic status will affect students’ retention in schools. The main objective of this research was to find out the effects of parents’ socio-economic status on children’s retention in schools in Rukungiri municipality southern division. The specific objectives of this research were: to find out the effect of education level of fathers on children retention in school, to find out the effect of education level of mothers on children retention in school, to find out the effect of occupation of fathers on children retention in school, to find out the effect of occupation of mothers on children retention in school, to find out the effect of household income on children retention in school, to identify the causes of school dropouts in and to find out parents attitude towards education in Rukungiri municipality southern division. The researcher used both qualitative and quantitative research approach data was collected from the field that is primary data. Sampling techniques were used during this research. 4 cells were selected to represent the 8 cells a sample of 124 households was calculated using Yamane’s formula to represent 600 households in Kanyinya ward. The researcher represented the findings of the research in figures, tables and analyzed the data using a statistical package called SPSS. The researcher concluded that the wellbeing of parents greatly affect the retention of children in schools. The government should invest more in education of girl child because mothers spend more time with their children and it should try to make education services less costly as many people said that poverty is the major cause of children failing to stay in schools.
