dc.description.abstractThere has been limited research carried out about luxury tourism in Uganda and therefore limited information concerning the number of luxury tourists, luxury destinations and frequented luxury destinations that exist in the country‟s tourism sector. The objectives of the study included: to classify luxury tourism services and facilities at Bugala Island, to examine the state of luxury tourism at Bugala Island, to determine the frequency of luxury tourists at Bugala Island and to assess the challenges facing luxury tourism at Bugala Island. Simple random sampling method was embarked on to source data samples from the field. During data collection, the researcher then embarked on one-to-one interviews to administer guided questionnaires to respective respondents who in turn gave relevant responses that were helpful during data analysis, to draw valid conclusions of the study. The study established that majority of the hotels at Bugala offer low end services to visiting clients. In addition, most of the hotels at Bugala have basic facilities however Brovard sands lodge is the most vibrant hotel at the destination. The Island receives a considerable number of luxury tourists especially in the high peak season, as expressed on average, 872 visitors visit the destination during this period. Finally, luxury tourism at Bugala faces fierce challenges such as high cost of power, limited investment in skill acquaintance and very minimal marketing. The recommendations to challenges of the study include; selecting the right people for the job in response to the challenge of low-end services, establishing world class hotel structures and renovation of the old hotel buildings in response to the challenge of basic hotel facilities. Liaising with other tourism bodies in the country in order to respond to the challenges of very minimal marketing and lastly, lobbying for government support to address the three main challenges facing luxury tourism at the destination.
