dc.description.abstractABSTRACT This research was carried out on the assessment of records management practices at Arua District Local Government central registry in order to find out how effective and efficient the records are managed and provide recommendable strategies for improvement. The objectives of the study were to find out the various types of records kept at registry, to examine the existing record management practices, to find out the benefits derived from proper records management, to find out challenges faced in managing records and to find out solution to the challenges faced in managing records in the central registry. The literature review in the study covers the types of records, records management practices from creation to disposal. The challenges faced by the records management in the central registry and solution to improve records management at the registry. Different data collection methods were used for example interviews and observation to collect data for the study and the research methods involves both qualitative and quantitative approach were used to analyze the findings and relevant sampling to select respondents that would answer the questions to the study. Sampling to the study respondents was advantageous. The key respondents were well positioned to provide information on the subject matter analyzed because they had spent over five years in the organization. The findings revealed the types of records kept in the registry for example Personal records which included application letters, appointment letters, performance appraisal forms, attendance and sick leave records, legal records they included records relating to property rights: land titles, probate, contracts, and agreements, leases, and licenses and records relating to citizenship rights, financial records they portray the income and expenditures of the organization like pay roll forms for employees working at the district. The central registry also faced various challenges like Lack of enough professionally trained records managers, insufficient records storage space and misplacement of files. Recommendations to the challenges were also given like organizing seminars regarding records management for registry staff, Expanding the central registry and increasing security to records kept in the central registryen_US
