dc.description.abstractOnline social networking sites have changed the way people interact and communicate. This study sought to understand the influence of online social networks on the youth today. This was done through a number of objectives.ie establishing demographic and social economic factors associated with use of social media, analyzing the dependency of youth on online social sites and it’s exhausting in life routine, evaluating social and political direction of youth to utilizing online social networks in their day today life, assessing the beneficial and preferred form of social media for youth and evaluating the attitude of youth towards online social networks and measure the spending time on these sites. Most youth who are members of these online networking sites spend numerous hours on these sites at the expense of other things. This research paper looked at the impact of online social networking sites on youth of Kampala today. The study focused on three respondents i.e. students, parents and workers using questionnaire and interviews as tools of study. A sample size of fifty sever (57) respondents was used among which 40 of them were male and the other 17 were females. Interviews, observations and open group discussions were used as sources of data collection in this survey. The study of this research aims to create an immense level of awareness among the youth exposed to such social networking sites (SNS) and findings will not only bear results as to how adversely and positively is the youth affected by the usage of these sites but also will help the youth to understand the usage of these networking sites efficiently. The results of the study indicated that all (100%) of the youth who participated in the study use some form of social media. A majority of the respondents in this study use WhatsApp (52%) and Facebook (42%), in which they use social network sites for more than an hour in a day (54%). Facebook and WhatsApp were also among the top two ranked preferred methods of social media. The study found out that SNS have a high effect on youths ‘academic performance. It was established that most of the youth spend more than an hour on Social Network Sites with a 54% response, less than one hour 25% response and 18% less than 30 minutes. The 3% that spends all day on SNS. There-fore, the youth need to be informed through talks and forums on the need to manage their time especially while visiting SNS sites since most of them be-come so much addicted at the expense of study time. On this part they would be informed on better ways of still visiting the sites but for the right purposes-academic.en_US
