| dc.description.abstract | The study aimed at designing an online registration system for Nile Vocational Institute (NVI) Library in order to improve on the services offered by the library to its users. The objectives of the study were to; examine the existing registration system used at Nile Vocational Institute Library, establish the challenges in designing an online registration system for students at Nile Vocational Institute Library, determine the requirements for designing an online registration system for students at Nile Vocational Institute Library, design and develop an online system for the registration of students at Nile Vocational Institute Library.
The study adopted a case study research design that employed mixed qualitative and quantitative data collection methods of questionnaires, interview and observation methods. The study used a purposive sampling method to select 70 respondents who participated in the study at Nile Vocational Institute.
The study found out that the current system is manual and paper based registration which uses registers and counter books to register the students in the library where library users make long queues by to be registered. Inadequate funding of the library was a major challenge in designing an online registration system. Users suggested Purchase of ICTs and Training of the library a with the implementation of user friendly system that can simplify the process of registration as the requirement of the system.
The study concluded that adopting the online registration system, increasing the library funding, recruitment of more library staff, designing a user friendly interface system, purchase of more icts such as computers, training of staff members would help to improve the skills and knowledge, implementation of the online registration system would enable the library staff easily register users of the library and save the time wasted.
