| dc.description.abstract | This study looked at the impact of UPE Policy on the performance of the pupils studying in UPE schools specifically Nyabirerema Primary School located in Rukiga district south western part of Uganda. A study was used to ascertain how the performance, Pupil teacher ratio, Pupil classroom ratio, staffing, Pupil desk ratio, and enrolment have changed. The main objective of this study was to analyse the trend of the UPE performance in Uganda since 1985 and the specific objective were to assess the presence of the structural breaks in the series, to ascertain the enrolment of pupils, the pupil teacher ratio, pupil classroom ratio, the pupil desk ratio in Nyabirerema Primary School. The problem that brought about the research to be carried out was the poor performance of pupils in the PLE examinations. Analysis was done using the ARIMA model that specifically looked at how each independent variable (pupil teacher ratio, pupil classroom ratio, pupil desk ratio, staffing) affected the dependent variable (Performance of pupils).
In this research, some variables were found to be significant while others were not. Pupil teacher ratio, Pupil classroom ratio, Pupil desk ratio and enrolment of pupils were not significant whereas staffing was the only variable which was significant. Enrolment, pupil desk ratio, pupil classroom ratio, pupil teacher ratio not being significant have affected performance in that it leads to the decrease and increase in various periods. The performance of the pupils was found not to be stationary over the study period. The significance of staffing on performance can be observed in that most of the times when there is high availability of staff, the performance has been high and times when there are few staff, the performance has been low. I tested for the structural break using the Chow test and I found out that all the variables did not show the presence of structural breaks.
In order to improve on the performance of pupils in PLE, the government should increase on the staffing to the UPE schools as it has been clearly observed that the ratio of pupils to teacher is on the rise. | en_US |
