The study focused on the assessment of tourism facilities and services offered for tourism development in Kaerera sub county. A case study of Katanda parish. It was guided by the following objectives: To identify tourism resources and facilities for tourism development in katanda parish in katerera sub county, To examine the level of tourism development in katanda parish and To identify the strategies that have been employed to develop tourism in katanda parish. . A sample size of 60 respondents was obtained and which included 45 local community members of Mbuga and Kizira villages use of both simple random and purposive sampling techniques,aslo10 facility owners and 5 local leaders . The data was collected using questionnaires and guided interviews and was analyzed quantitatively using SPSS and qualitatively using thematic analysis.
The study revealed that there are different existing tourism resources and facilities in Katanda parish varying from Hills and mountains, traditional food, water resources/ crater lakes, natural plants forest, music dance and drama museum and monument. This showed that water resources are the most existing tourism resource in katanda parish with 92.0%which indicated that these water resources and craters are the most tourist attractions in katanda parish. The study revealed that there different services. It was also found out that there is limited existence of museum and monument in katanda parish showed by 8.3%. The study further revealed that there are different facilities available for tourism development in katanda parish which included accommodation, picnic/resting places areas, restaurants and local foods, water supply and organizational camps. The study showed that accommodation facilities and water supply are the most utilized facilities for example hotels, lodges and many others in katanda parish and this was confirmed by 82.% Therefore the study showed that the accommodation facilities are the most integral of the tourism industry that deals with provision of hospitality services to the tourists at the destination in katanda parish.
The study found out that sensitization of the local community members though awareness campaigns influences their perception towards tourism development in the area . Education of the local community members about tourism enables them to participate in tourism matters hence tourism development. | en_US |
