| dc.description.abstract | Kampala is center of visual arts in Uganda, and yet the appreciation from the public (biggest percentage) towards the arts is still staggering. This has forced most artists to turn to neighboring Kenya and the western- European countries since they offer more exposure, opportunities and the welcome their country (Uganda) can’t offer. In finding reasons for the low public appreciation, the survey seeks to answer questions on; challenges and setbacks artists are facing in response to the low appreciation and how to change this perception. Structured questions were administered to visual artists mostly lecturers at Margaret Trowell school of industrial design and fine Arts because of their longer, professional experience in the art industry in Kampala. Descriptive analysis was used for data presentation. The study subsequently identified if the low appreciation by the public can be refocused and ways how it can be refocused. In chapter one, which is mostly the introduction to the research, a more detailed interpretation is given to the existence of the low public appreciation towards visual arts in Kampala in both the introduction and background. The chapter further entails the purpose, objective, and the research questions that guided the study. In chapter two, information is compiled from different published sources. Guided by the three study objectives, more knowledge on the low appreciation to visual arts in Kampala is summed up from different views as given by the different individuals. This chapter gives detailed information on the challenges facing visual artists in Kampala in relation to the low public appreciation towards visual arts, what visual artists have done to change the low appreciation towards visual arts? Have these ways been influential? And what ways visual artists think can refocus public appreciation towards the arts in Kampala. Chapter three gives a clear stand for the methods used in the collection of the research findings in chapter four. This chapter will present the methodology which is used to carry out the study. It also further describes the type and source of data, the target population and sampling methods and techniques that are used to select the sample size. It also describes how data is collected and analyzed and also introduces the research findings and analysis of the research report, compiling responses and data collected from ten respondents who included lecturers at MTSIFA who filled in questionnaires handed out to them and some of the respondents were interviewed. This helped to get more detailed and personal information about the low appreciation from majority of the public in Kampala. The respondents were mainly male. | en_US |
