Assessing the impact of land fragmentation on food security in Kakanju Sub-county Bushenyi District

Abstract

This study sought to contribute knowledge to evaluation of land fragmentation on food security with specific reference to Kakanju Sub County. The study was guided by the specific objectives as follows; To determine the causes of land fragmentation, to evaluate the effects of the land fragmentation on food security and to find out the measures to solve land fragmentation .The study utilised random sampling design to obtain the relevant data. The sample selected for this study consisted of 45 residents of Kakanju sub county and 5 respondents were government officials making a total of 50 respondents. Primary data was mainly obtained through field interviews that were carried out through using of the questionnaires to the residents of the Kakanju area. Secondary data was obtained from both the published and unpublished sources. Data was analysed using both descriptive and Statistical Package for the Social Sciences. It was found out that increased number of children with in families due to increased birth rates was the most cause of land fragmentation and land renting was the least cause as given by the respondents. The major effect of land fragmentation was time wastage in travelling from one plot to another. The major solution suggested by respondents to overcome land fragmentation was family planning so as to reduce birth rates and hence reducing pressure on the available land.
