A research report submitted to the Department of Plant Sciences, Microbiology and Biotechnology in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the award of Bachelors of Science Degree In Ethnobotany of Makerere University-Kampalaen_US
The overall purpose of the study was to determine the appropriate propagation techniques for Vernonia amygdalina. The methods that were used included stem cuttings and seeds. A total of 500 seeds were planted in a 1m by 5m nursery bed and stem cuttings were planted both in the nursery bed and in pots. In the screen, the same number of seeds were sowed in 3 different pots. The seeds were collected from Kyenjojo district, Ngezi village and the stems were collected from Buloba parish, Kaseero village in Wakiso district. Watering was done once a week for 24 days. Observation was done for both seeds and cuttings both in the open field and in the screen house and where necessary photographs were taken. Results showed that cuttings that were dipped in IAA performed better than those that were dipped in IBA and NAA, both in the field and screen house. However, those cuttings planted in the screen house were better than those in the open field. The control experiment was better than those planted with rooting hormones. These results are shown in tables 1 and 2, and graphs 3 and 4 and 5. The data was analyzed using graphs and tables and this revealed that growth hormones are important in promoting root development. However, this plant can be propagated even without hormones.en_US
