Local peoples’ perceptions on priority tree species for charcoal production in Kakooge Sub-County in Nakasongola District.

Abstract

This research dealt with the local people`s perception on priority tree species for charcoal production. Charcoal production is carried out as supplementary activity (37%). The objectives of the study were to assess the most preferred woodland tree species for charcoal production, to assess the criteria local people use to select species for charcoal production, to assess the conservation measures used for conserving the tree species used for charcoal. The research study was carried out in Kakooge sub county, Katuugo parish in Nakasongola. The research was qualitative and quantitative and multi stage probability method was used in selecting the sample size. Data was collected using interview method and close-opens questionnaires were used during the interview, reviewing of literature to find out botanical names of trees. Data was analyzed using statistical package of social scientists (SPSS), descriptive analysis was used which included histograms and frequency tables. The results indicate that Combretum molle and Combretum collinum were the most preferred traditional tree species and the secondary tree species most preferred was Mangifera indica and the criteria mostly used for tree species selection was the dense of the wood produced and the most conservational measure used in the villages was allowing coppicing of cut trees. the most activity that is reducing forest cover is charcoal production and the main threat to forest conservation is poverty. In conclusion density of wood is considered when selecting a tree species to use for charcoal production and tree planting is the most activity carried out to conserve the tree species used for charcoal production I recommend government putting in place development programs to provide alternative source of employment thus reducing on over dependence on charcoal production.
