dc.description.abstractIntroduction; Smartphone use is on a rise today with half of the world’s population as subscribers to and adaptors of this fast growing tech-economy. Young people are at the forefront of this economy with over 70% of them having a Smartphone. With the enormous benefits of smartphone use, it carries with it negative implications manifested with a phenomena known as smartphone addiction. Negative consequences that are related to over use of smartphone include: emotional instability, declined class performance of students, road accidents, deteriorating health, depression and anxiety. Objective: The general objective of the study was to determine the prevalence of smartphone addiction and associated factors among undergraduate students at Makerere University. Methodology: This was a quantitative cross-sectional study aiming at determining the prevalence of smartphone addiction and associated factors among undergraduate students. Students from 6 halls of residence; Mary Stuart hall, complex hall and Africa hall for girls, Lumumba, Mitchell hall and University hall for male students participated in the study. The sample size consists of 363 undergraduate students. Data was managed using STATA version 12 and the finding were presented to the Department of Nursing, Makerere University. Results: The prevalence of smartphone addiction among the resident undergraduates was 50.4%. The college of study of participants was found to be associated with smatphone addiction after controlling for confounding variables. Students from humanities-based colleges stood a higher chance of smartphone addiction as compared to students from science-based colleges. Discussion and conclusion: Smartphone addiction is on increase in the current generation due to copious advancements in technology. Users of smartphones need therefore to take caution about the debilitating effects of addiction. Beneficial use of phones should be prioritized by individuals and concerned institutions such as schools and higher institutions of learning.en_US
