dc.description.abstractThis study was performed to assess the strategic (biosecurity) measures to reduce diseases in commercial layers in Wakiso district Nsangi Sub County. Twenty farms rearing layer birds were visited in Nsangi sub county Wakiso district were selection of farms was randomly done by myself. There was a high level of awareness of farmers 98% on some of biosecurity measures to control diseases such as more than 87% of farmers vaccinated their birds against certain diseases like Marek’s, Newcastle, Gumboro and many others, practice of good management, proper hygiene and surveillance be emphasized and ensured in order to prevent diseases The findings emanating from the study carried out in Nsangi on 20 selected farmers revealed that poultry farming is mostly dominated by males. Almost All (97.5%) of the respondents had one form of formal education. The majority of the farmers sourced biosecurity information from extensionist, co-poultry measures used by farmer’s inspections of flocks daily to pick mortality, isolation and quarantine of sick birds, vaccination of birds, adequate cleaning of feeding and drinking troughs. The analysis of contribution of each attributes to the poultry disease management showed that biosecurity practices contributed largely to explain overall degree of poultry disease management in Nsangi. In conclusion majority of the poultry farmers in the study area manage their farms at low level of poultry disease management. Therefore, it was recommended that farmers attended exhibitions where they learnt more on how to maintain the good performance of biosecurity on their farms and acquire newskills.en_US
