dc.description.abstractThe study was aimed at finding out the guidelines for improving the preservation and conservation of information resources at Uganda Human Rights Commission Library. The objectives of the study were, to identify the types of information resources that are preserved and conserved at Uganda Human Rights Commission Library, to examine the causes of deterioration of information materials at Uganda Human Rights Commission Library, to find out the challenges that librarians face during preservation and conservation of information resources at Uganda Human Rights Commission Library, to establish guidelines for improving the preservation and conservation of information resources at Uganda Human Rights Commission Library. A descriptive research design was used. This is the basic research method in which the researcher describes the state of the affairs as exists and reports the findings. The researcher collected information by interviewing individuals, observing activities and document analysis in the library. The research design such as interview guide and observation guide were the instruments which were used for data collection. The researcher found out several challenges that affects the improving of preservation and conservation of information resources such as inadequate space, lack of library preservation and conservation policy and collection management policy, user education, inadequate materials, inadequate funds monitoring and evaluation, where possible solutions, conclusion and recommendations were laid to improve on the preservation and conservation of library resources in order to increase on the life span of resources at Uganda Human Rights Commission. The researcher recommended that in order to have clear guidelines for preservation and conservation of information resources the following have to be observed; funding the preservation and conservation activities, user education to staff and library users, skills and competences should be considered when hiring staff, library security must be obtained to overcome resource vandalism, in-service training to staff, space and location should be considered to get rid of crowded library space and installation of ICTS to reduce on space consumption due to overloaded information resources as well as cleaning and dusting the library resources to get rid of situations that can lead to deterioration of information resources.en_US
