dc.description.abstractThe study was conducted to access the comparison on the characteristics of local chicken enterprises in female and male headed households in Busimbi sub-county. Households were surveyed using structured questionnaires and the respondents were sampled by snow balling procedure. Data on age, gender, education of local chicken farmer‟s in Busimbi sub-county was collected to assess the social demographic characteristics of the local poultry farmers in Busimbi sub-county. Data on sources of feeds, vaccination of local chicken farmers in Busimbi sub county was collected to assess the production characteristics of local poultry in Busimbi subcounty. Data on marketing of local chickens was collected to assess the factors influencing marketing of local chickens among households of Busimbi sub-county. The study revealed that females dominated the females dominated the poultry industry (55.0%) while only (45.0%) were males.53.8% of the households were male headed since it was a rural setting. Therefore men in this study area make most of the production decisions regarding local poultry production. And only 46.2% were female headed. The study also showed that majority (16.25%) of the male headed households fed the birds on maize. This is because these households grow maize as their other source of income. Most of the female headed households, (12.5%) feed their birds on feed remains (kitchen refuse) thrown away as useless to human consumption. (38.75%) of female headed households has access to extension services while only (15%) of male headed households had access. This is because, women always have time and they are easy to deal with in addition to their ability to quickly adapt to new information and technologies faster than men.en_US
