dc.description.abstractThe aim of the study was to develop guidelines for digitization of library materials at Masaka Public Library. The objectives of the study were to; identify the materials that can be digitized, establish the needs of users of Masaka Public Library regarding digitization, identify the requirements for digitization and propose guidelines for digitization in Masaka Public Library. The study used a case study research design while adopting both quantitative and qualitative research approaches. 33 library users and 4 library staff were conveniently and purposively selected to participate in the study respectively. Questionnaires, interviews and observation were used to collect data. The study revealed that majority of the information resources which can be digitised at Masaka Public Library were text books. It was also established that the other information resources included; periodicals; newspapers, Reference materials, Journals, Government Documents, holy books and magazines which existed both in paper and digital form. The study also established that majority, 10(33%) of library users visit Masaka Public Library to access updated information while others visit the library to; revise books, access Internet services, read news papers and meet friends. The different services offered at MPL were; research services, computer services, circulation services, reading space, orientation to the library users, referral to information centers that have services, reference services, online search services, children services, book mobile services and Internet services. The requirements for accessing information resources at Masaka Public Library were; a school ID, National ID and a driving permit else library users were not able to access the information resources. The different ICTs that can support the digitisation of the information resources were; computers, scanners and the photocopier in the library. In the study, 29(94%) of the respondents reported that the guidelines for digitisation of the information resources were very important which would promote access to the information resources, lead to efficient information access and sharing, reduce the need for physical space in the storage of resources, improve storage and retrieval of information resources and lead to preservation of fragile and rare materials.en_US
