A study on the productivity of scavenging local poultry birds in Nalutuntu sub county Mubende district

The study aimed at the study on the productivity of local poultry birds in Nalutuntu sub county Mubende district. The data was collected through the use of questionnaires, interviews with farmers. Secondary data was collected from different villages, veterinary officers’ and ministry of Agriculture Animal Industry and Fisheries in Nalutuntu sub county Mubende district. Data was collected and recorded in Microsoft excel 2016 and analyzed using SPSS version 20. The local hens lay a number of eggs which ranges between 11-15 eggs per laying cycle and some lay above 16 eggs per laying cycle. The hatchability for chicks was 11-14 chicks per hatching cycle. The mean live weights for cocks and hens were 1948g and 1348g respectively. The mean growth rates to the age of 10 weeks were 4.6g and 5.4g. The factors that limit productivity were diseases like Newcastle, fowl pox, Avian influenza, predators and snakes consuming birds and eggs. The supplementary feeds given to birds were grains, vegetables and vitamins. Well monitored vaccination, health management and feeding programs can facilitate better performance of local chickens in terms of productivity.
