Herbal medicine use in Uganda and the world at large is at its peak because of the documented efficacy, effectiveness, cheap cost and less side effects. The estimates of herbal medicine users in the world is 80% and 60% in Uganda, yet with all this demand, the phytochemical composition is not being known .The study therefore aimed at determining the phytochemicals present in selected herbal medicines sold in Kawempe Division, Kampala(Uganda) with the following specific objectives; (i) To document different local herbal medicines sold in Kawempe Division claimed to cure candidiasis, (ii)To determine the phytochemicals present in selected herbal medicines that are sold in Kawempe Division claiming to cure candidiasis. A questionnaire was used to collect data on the different local herbal medicines sold in Kawempe-Kampala, Uganda. A total of fifty (50) local herbal medicines (liquid and powder) were identified in the study done in Kawempe Division and 30 herbal medicines were selected for the phytochemical analysis that was done using the standards provided by the Biochemistry Research laboratory at College of Veterinary Medicine Animal Resources and Biosecurity Makerere University. From the phytochemical analysis, the results showed that tannins and flavonoids were 100% present in all the samples, 66% of the herbal medicines shown that it contained all the phytochemicals. saponins and flavonoids were 80% present in all the selected medicines, the presence of Saponins and flavonoids implies that the medicines may possess treatment of fungal infections. I therefore recommend that herbal medicines should be tested for the efficacy and potency by regulatory bodies before being sold to patientsen_US
