dc.description.abstractThis study titled ‘An automated records index for research records’ was carried out at the Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI), Makerere University. The study aimed at finding out the existing filing and retrieval techniques used for research records at IDI and designing an automated index for fast, easy, efficient, and controlled retrieval of research records. The study used a case study research design and followed majorly qualitative research methods to collect, analyze and present data. Interviews, Observations, and documentary review were the main methods of data collection, taking a sample size of 3 respondents who included the Director of Research the IDI plus 2 other records staff. Data was presented using qualitative research techniques such as paraphrasing, direct quotation, and descriptive narration of field observations. The study established that IDI generates a number of records which include; research records on HIV AIDS, TB, Malaria and Covid-19 among others, which exist in both paper and electronic formats. The study finally designed and recommended an automated HTML, CSS, and MYSQL indexing system tool, similar to the case of Intelligent Health Management System, were in the Software However, a combination of both the manual and the automated indexing systems employed in execution of research records filing and retrieval tool is appropriate for IDI.en_US
