Assessing the potential effects of plastic wastes on selected aquatic species at Lake Victoria: case study Kigungu Landing Sites in Entebbe

Abstract

The main purpose of this study was to determine the effects of plastic waste on aquatic species on Kigungu landing site along the shores of Lake Victoria in Entebbe. Specifically, the study sought to determine the sources and the types of plastic waste; to establish the causes of plastic wastes and to assess the potential effects of plastic wastes on aquatic species focusing on fish (Nile perch and Tilapia). The study used qualitative and quantitative tools to collect the necessary data with the aid of questionnaires, interview guides and field observations. Data analysis was carried out at both univariate and bivariate levels using Stata 15.0 version. Results showed that Polyethylene terephthalate was a common type of plastic in form of bottles (water, soda, local brew) and food containers. Ignorance of traders and fishermen in regard to the effects of plastic waste were the single number one cause of huge influx of plastic waste in the area. Furthermore, there was a significant perceived adverse effect on aquatic life of fish due to plastic waste as revealed by the chi-square test. The study recommends the need to for government and other stakeholders to provide educational resources to the public on more sustainable plastic use and disposal and also raise public awareness about proper disinfection, reuse and disposal of plastic waste through social media and traditional marketing campaigns.
