Abstract
This study explores the relationship between residence types, nature of residence, internet
access, proximity to campus, and academic performance among students at School of Statistics
and Planning, Makerere University. The research methodology involved primary data
collection using an online questionnaire filled by sample size of 289 observations. At bivariate
level internet access had a significant relationship on academic performance whereas residence
types, proximity to campus and nature of residence were statistically insignificant. By carrying
out analysis using ordinal logistic regression, it was determined that residence types (hostels,
halls, rentals and commuting from home), nature of residence (single and mixed sex), internet
access availability, and proximity to campus do not exhibit statistically significant impact on
academic performance. These findings challenge common assumptions about the direct
influence of these factors on academic outcomes and suggest that other variables, such as socio
-economic background, study habits, and personal motivation, may be more influential. The
study underscores the importance of providing equitable access to resources and support
services regardless of residence type or location. Educational institutions are encouraged to
prioritize the development of comprehensive support strategies that address diverse student
needs. Further research is recommended to explore additional determinants that may interact
with these factors and influence academic success differently across various student
demographics and institutional circumstances. By gaining a deeper understanding of these
dynamics, policymakers and educators can implement more effective interventions to promote Student achievement and well being.
