Abstract
The study explores the effects of part-time employment on academic performance among University students at School of statistics and planning at Makerere University, Uganda. The sample used in the research consisted of 286 respondents from a population of 1004, students across various programs. The research methodology involved primary data collection using an online questionnaire filled by sample size of 286 respondents. The analysis was carried out using the Pearson’s Chi-square method at 5% level of significance and multinomial logistic regression method were the analysis of the data revealed that most of the respondents from the study were females (56.99%) compared to the males. Among those who did part-time employment majority were employed in the informal sector (68.60%) compared to those employed in the formal sector. The study showed that part-time employed students have a significantly higher relative risk of getting a secondlower grade (RRR=1.81, P=0.04) compared to a second-upper grade relative to nonemployed students. The study employed human capital theory and time allocation theory to explain these dynamics, revealing that while part-time work could potentially enhance skills and work experience, it often resulted in reduced study time and academic engagement. The researcher therefore recommended that the university should establish a dedicated student support services unit that provides comprehensive assistance to part-time employed students. This unit should offer counselling, time management workshops, and academic tutoring to help students develop effective strategies for navigating the demands of work and study
