Abstract
This study investigated the socio economic impacts of religious tourism on local communities in Uganda. with a specific focus on Namugongo martyrs shrine, a significant pilgrimage site associated with the martyrdom of early Christian converts in the Buganda kingdom. Utilizing a mixed methods research design, the study employed both quantitative and qualitative approaches to capture a comprehensive view of community perspectives on religious tourism. A Total of 60 community members were randomly selected for structured interviews. Data collection instruments included structured questionnaires and semi structured interviews aimed at eliciting insights on economic contributions, cultural significance and community dynamics. Key findings indicate that the shrine serves as a catalyst for local economic development creating employment opportunities, stimulating small scale businesses, and facilitating cultural preservation, Despite it's benefits, challenges such as environmental degradation, inadequate facilities, and varying perceptions of safety were also identified. The favourable climatic conditions contribute to a rich biodiversity that enhances the tourism experience while promoting agricultural activities among residents. This study concludes that enhancing community engagement, improving visitor facilities and fostering environmental sustainability are crucial for optimizing the socio economic benefits of religious tourism. Recommendations for future initiatives include collaborative efforts with local stakeholders to ensure that tourism growth is inclusive and beneficial for the community
