Impact of field attachment on career preparedness of Makerere University music students

Abstract

This study investigated the impact of field attachment experiences on the career preparedness of music students in the Department of Performing Arts at Makerere University. The study involved a sample of current and former university students majoring in music, specifically from Makerere University. A cross-sectional research design was employed, utilizing qualitative data collection methods. The study included selected final-year students and recent graduates who had completed their attachment, and data was analyzed using descriptive statistics and thematic analysis. The findings reveal that field attachment significantly enhances career preparedness by providing practical experience that complements their theoretical knowledge, increases professional networking, and improves self-efficacy and confidence. Field attachment also yields a greater understanding of career options and the development of transferable skills. It was observed that high levels of self-efficacy positively correlate with improved career expectations, while music performance anxiety negatively affects both self-efficacy and career aspirations. The results underscore the importance of structured field attachment programs in fostering essential skills and confidence among music students, ultimately preparing them for successful careers in the music industry. Recommendations for enhancing field attachment experiences are provided to optimize student outcomes and support their professional development. The study concludes that while the field attachment program is highly effective in enhancing students' professional readiness, its efficacy is hampered by systemic issues. It is recommended that the Department institute a structured stipend or transport allowance system, strengthen the vetting and monitoring of host organizations, and integrate formal business and professional skills training into the attachment framework to ensure a more consistent and comprehensive learning experience for all students.
