    The role of UBC radio in promoting Kadongo Kamu music in Uganda

    This study examined the role of Uganda Broadcasting Corporation (UBC) Radio in promoting Kadongo Kamu music in Uganda. Kadongo Kamu, a traditional music genre known for its storytelling and cultural expression, has declined in popularity, particularly among the youth, despite its historical importance. The research aims to assess UBC Radio’s contribution to the preservation and promotion of this music, its effectiveness, and the challenges faced in doing so. A qualitative approach was used, involving interviews with Kadongo Kamu artists and UBC Radio staff, and analysis of relevant radio programs and playlists. Findings indicate that while UBC Radio has played a significant role in sustaining Kadongo Kamu through dedicated programs and airplay, limited resources, competition from private stations, and shifting audience preferences hinder its full impact. The study recommends strengthened cultural policies, increase media support, and enhanced collaboration between UBC and artists as essential strategies for preserving and revitalizing Kadongo Kamu music in Uganda.

    An analysis of the marketing and promotional strategies used by the VIPI band in Kampala’s music industry

    This study examined the marketing and promotional strategies used by the VIPI Band in Kampala’s music industry. The study aimed to identify the strategies employed by the band, assess their effectiveness, and examine the challenges encountered in promoting the band. A qualitative research approach was adopted using interviews, participant observation, and document analysis. Study participants involved members of the VIPI Band and other individuals involved in the band’s activities. Additional data were gathered through observations of the band performances and audio-visual analysis. The findings revealed that the VIPI Band uses social media marketing, branding, live performances, networking, and word-of-mouth promotion to market its services. These strategies have increased the band’s visibility, audience engagement, and performance opportunities. However, the band faces challenges such as limited financial resources and stiff competition within Kampala’s music industry. The study concludes that effective marketing and promotional strategies have contributed significantly to the growth and recognition of the VIPI Band. It recommends that other performing bands should strengthen their digital marketing efforts, branding, and collaborations to enhance their competitiveness and sustainability in Uganda’s music industry.

    Role of YouTube in promoting Swangz avenue music in Kampala

    This study aimed to examine the role of YouTube in promoting Swangz Avenue‟s music. It focused on how YouTube as a digital platform has transformed Swangz Avenue’s marketing strategies, audience engagement and brand visibility. The researcher employed a qualitative study approach and gathered data using interviews, observations and music video analysis. The study found out that Swangz Avenue uses YouTube as a vital promotional tool which offers them measurable engagement. Swangz Avenue first pitches its new music videos on YouTube before any other platform; and that the quality of music video uploads influences the promotion rates. The study however revealed some, challenges such as algorithm changes, internet accessibility and high data costs in Uganda which limits its full potential in terms of accessibility and consumption. The study concludes that YouTube has significantly enhanced Swangz Avenue‟s digital presence and continues to play a central role in shaping contemporary music promotion in Kampala alongside other platforms.

    Influence of afrobeats on the production of Ugandan popular music

    This dissertation explores how Afrobeats has influenced the production of Ugandan popular music. By tracing its history and evolution, the study examines ways Afrobeats has shaped the sound, style, and identity of some of Ugandan popular music today. Specifically, it explores how Uganda popular musicians have localized the Afrobeats elements to fit within the Ugandan music culture. Data were gathered through interviews with producers, songwriters, and performers of Afrobeats music in Uganda as well as media review of Afrobeats music. Study findings show that Afrobeats has greatly influenced Ugandan popular music by blending local rhythms with global sounds, creating both opportunities and challenges for artists. Its popularity in Uganda has led to expanded fanbase, increased bookings, creativity, relatability, and uniqueness. Despite some noted challenges such as plagiarism, Afrobeats bears potential for shaping the future of Ugandan music, but its success depends on deliberate efforts to localize it. Results are discussed in terms of how Ugandan artists can improve quality production, uniqueness and collaboration so as to compete globally and remain locally and regionally relevant.

    The Impact of music on youth culture among university students: a case study of Makerere University

    Objectives of the Study: Objectives of the study includes General objective and Specific objectives. General Objective: The general objective of this study is to explore the role of music in coping with stress, anxiety and emotional challenges, influencing lifestyle choices, and enhancing academic performance among Makerere University students. Specific Objectives: 1. To examine how music serves as a coping mechanism for stress and anxiety among university students. 2. To explore how music influences the lifestyle, fashion, and social behaviors of students. 3. To investigate the relationship between music involvement and academic performance at Makerere University. 4. To analyze the perceptions of students regarding the influence of music on their well-being and academic life. Conclusion: The study concludes that music has a profound impact on youth culture among Makerere University students. Music influences students emotionally, socially, culturally, and academically. It serves as an important coping mechanism that helps students manage stress and emotional challenges while also promoting self-expression and social interaction. The findings further demonstrate that music contributes significantly to the formation of youth identity through fashion, language, values, and social behavior. Music has become an integral aspect of university culture, providing students with opportunities for creativity, cultural expression, and social integration. Although music offers numerous benefits, the study concludes that its influence is not entirely positive. The effects of music depend largely on the type of content consumed and the extent of students’ engagement with music-related activities. When used responsibly, music enhances academic performance, emotional well-being, and social cohesion. However, excessive involvement in music entertainment activities may negatively affect students’ academic responsibilities and personal conduct. Overall, the study concludes that music remains a powerful cultural force that shapes youth experiences and contributes significantly to the development of university students at Makerere University.
