ItemApproaches to technology integration in the teaching and learning of film courses at the department of performing arts and film, Makerere University(Makerere University, 2025) Ainobwengye, IbronThe primary objective of this study was to examine the approaches to integrating modern technology in teaching film courses at the Department of Performing Arts and Film, Makerere University. To achieve this objective, a qualitative case study approach was employed, utilizing questionnaires and purposive sampling methods targeting alumni from the 2019/2020 and 2020/2021 academic years. The findings revealed that modern technology, particularly in editing and camera operation, significantly enhances teaching and learning, with 90% of alumni rating editing software skills as highly aligned with industry needs. However, gaps in training for sound and lighting (only 30% and 35% of alumni received instruction, respectively), outdated equipment (40%), limited equipment availability (20%), inadequate training (25%), and poor internet connectivity (10%) hinder effective integration. These challenges limit graduates’ preparedness for the diverse skill set required in the film industry. Alumni proposed strategies such as upgrading equipment, establishing a functional studio, enhancing practical training, fostering industry partnerships, and improving infrastructure. The study recommends that the department prioritize equipment upgrades, expand practical training opportunities, strengthen faculty training, secure external funding, and promote collaborative learning to better align film courses with industry demands and enhance graduate employability.

ItemAn assessment of film as a tool of evangelization in the catholic Church of Uganda: the case study of Kampala Archdiocese.(Makerere University, 2022-04) Nampijja, AngelThis report assessed the use of film as a tool of evangelization in the Catholic Church in Uganda, specifically in the Kampala Archdiocese. The research used a mixed-methods case study design, coupled with interviews, questionnaires, and document analysis, to obtain the relevant data. The study's findings indicate that film is a potential medium for spreading the gospel in the Catholic Church if it is embraced and recognized. It was also found out that some of the challenges of using film as a tool of evangelization are that film is expensive, the church's negative mindset about film, and unprofessionalism, among others. Suggestions like sensitizing Christians to film and fundraising to support film can mitigate the challenges. The study will hopefully help the Catholic Church to embrace film as a potential medium of evangelization and appreciate the significance of film over other tools of evangelization, and the findings could also be used as a literature review by students doing related studies in the future.

ItemBach’s chorales as a model for composers of Catholic Church music in Kampala Archdiocese(Makerere University, 2023-10) Wopata, CharlesComposers of liturgical music in Kampala Archdiocese have often been limited in number to the effect that some possible contributors to the art are often left out. The four-part chorales of Johann Sebastian may offer valuable insight on how the art of composition can be accessible to 3 the majority of possible composers without requiring undertaking long years of musical training hence tapping on the creative potential of the aspiring liturgical composers. Moreover, in the spirit of ecumenism, the otherwise Lutheran compositions of Bach avail an opportunity for better understanding of the musical tradition of the Lutheran fraternity something that has not been of particular interest as the ecumenical spirit seems to be a mainly intellectual discourse. This study will seek to investigate how extant composers have tapped on the great wealth of Bach’s four-part compositions whilst exploring ways that this gem can be further exploited to the benefit of aspiring composers to bring about quality compositions

We specifically deal with Bwaise and Kazo Angola in Kawempe (Kampala) to establish how guetto gives popular musicians space to create and perform their music. The study was driven by the need to reveal the processes and procedures through which popular music develops in ghetto areas despite the challenges and hardships faced by residents. The ghetto has proven to be a fertile ground for creative expression and innovation. The research argues that the ghetto space has played a crucial role in shaping the country's popular music landscape, fostering a unique sound and style that resonates with local and international audiences. Through a blend of traditional and modern influences, ghetto-based artists have created a distinctive genre that reflects their experiences, struggles, and aspirations. The ghetto space has also provided a platform for marginalized youth to express themselves, tell their stories, and showcase their talents, thereby empowering them and challenging dominant narratives. As such, this research highlights the ways in which the ghetto space has contributed to the evolution of popular music in Uganda, from the emergence of new genres and sub-genres to the creation of innovative production styles and lyrics that speak to the hopes and struggles of the urban poor. By examining the relationship between the ghetto space and popular music development, this study sheds light on the creative potential and cultural significance of marginalized communities, and shedding light on the power of music to transform and uplift people even in areas where they struggle with other aspects of life.

ItemThe contribution of Tebere Arts Foundation to the development of audio drama in Kampala, Uganda(Makerere University, 2025) Ntungwerisho, Gareth EzraMy dissertation, titled: The Contribution of Tebere Arts Foundation to the Development of Audio Drama in Kampala, Uganda seeks to understand the nature of audio drama in Uganda today and uses the case study of Tebere Arts Foundation to investigate ways of sustaining the art form of audio drama in Uganda. The dissertation includes anecdotes and quotes from interviews from audio drama practitioners, Tebere Staff, EAI Lab alumni as well as analyses from audio dramas produced by Tebere Arts foundation to reveal the nature, structure and programs of Tebere and most importantly the ways in which they have contributed to the development of audio drama in Uganda. The dissertation aims to provide a qualitative assessment of an under-looked medium of drama that proves to useful tool for sensitization and cultural expression and through the use of the case study reveal how such a medium can be sustained and the importance of doing so. When composing my findings, I discovered a number of things about audio drama in Uganda: It lacks a clear documented history and is reliant on the accounts of a few practitioners, there is a lack of comprehensive education that would equip artists with skills for creation and production for the medium of audio drama and the art form of audio drama is underutilized in the commercial radio space due to the belief that the medium does not yield financial returns. This belief proved to be a great reason for the reliance of the art form on sponsorship from NGOs and explained the reluctance of artists to create audio drama for the sake of cultural and individual expression. Through this research, I have discovered that Tebere fills these gaps by through a program held between (2021-2023 with further extension to 2024) called the Audio Installation program. Through this program, Tebere provided a well-rounded and planned mentorship to the emerging artists, technical support to produce the audio dramas they had developed and the distribution services for their work through creating curated experiences like the listening booths at the Kampala International Theatre Festival and the listening parties held at British Council, Kyambogo University and Goethe Zentrum. My findings led to the conclusion that Tebere‘s audio drama installation program has made a contribution potential to the development audio drama in Kampala Uganda through provision of a well-rounded course and mentorship on audio drama, technical support and creation of distribution channels for the audio dramas they have produced. However the halt of the programme due to, challenges like reliance on donor funding, risk of censorship and the difficulty in creating a sustainable audience for the audio dramas hinder Tebere from having a greatly noticeable contribution to the development of audio drama in Kampala, Uganda.

ItemContribution of the Department of Performing Arts and Film, Makerere University towards the development of the Uganda Police Force Band(Makerere University, 2022) Andeoye, EricThis study addresses the contribution of the department of Preforming Arts and Film, Makerere University, to the development of the Uganda Police Force (UPF) Band. To do this, the researcher identified the alumni of PAF who work with UPF, especially the Band, to examine their contributions towards the development of this band. I used a qualitative research methodology for data collection. In employing this methodology, I interacted with my respondents to share their experiences and views about this topic. This methodology demanded that I use interviewing, recording, participant observation and documentary analysis to gather data. This study established that PAF has contributed immensely towards the development of UPF Band. This contribution can be seen through the training of officers in music theory and practicals, which they apply during the Band’s performances. The officers also acquire leadership skills, as they interact with fellow students and lecturers, which they have transferred into the Band. Therefore, to understand how the UPF Band has developed, one needs to put into consideration the contribution of different stakeholders.
