ItemThe effectiveness of radio in the social transformation of people in Kampala: A case study of the Late Date Show on Capital FM(Makerere University, 2018) Awori, HildaHumans are naturally very social beings and the way we communicate is a vital aspect of our lives, therefore, during the 1800s, there was a rush among inventors to develop newer and better ways to allow long distance and mass communication and over time, a number of communication technologies have sprung up, making long distance communication very easy. This dissertation is based on the assumption that radio still remains a main and huge transformative force in Kampala even with the abundance of technological alternatives. The question that this dissertation explores is to what extent and in what ways has radio been able to effect social change? What factors are limiting radio from its ability to transform people’s lives socially? What prospects exist in improving the effectiveness of radio in social transformation? In order to explore these questions, this dissertation analyses the genesis of radio, the development of radio in Uganda, an overview of politics and the development of radio in Uganda and economic development and radio in Uganda. Further still, this dissertation provides findings that radio still has potential to effect social change, regardless, of the many bottlenecks that stand in its way. I conclude this dissertation by providing recommendations as to how best radio can be utilized for it to be able to effectively transform lives socially.

ItemVariations in the performance standards of the Kampala Archdiocesan parish music festivals(Makerere University, 2019-08) Lubuulwa, Godfrey ; Nanvule, Halima ; Otaho, Mariam ; Ntege, VicentThe study examines variations in the performance standards in the Kampala Archdiocesan Parish Music festivals. By looking at its organization and the different stakeholders, the researchers seek to account for inconsistences in performance standards of this festival. The study analyses how the stakeholders‟ interests and preferences are reflected in the actual festival performances of the different choirs. The study also considers festivals as spaces for innovation and avenues for determining best music performers and performances, looking at the factors behind such declarations. The study reveals that stake holders play an important role of shaping the direction of the festival as well as determining the performance standards. In addition, organisation and funding for the festival are also some of the reasons which account for the presence of variations in the performance standards. Organisers are responsible for the late communication of the festival venues, assigning incompetent adjudicators who are sometimes few in numbers to judge the many participating choirs which arouse complaints among choirs. Therefore, inconsistences in the festival can be minimized if all stakeholders play their parts rightly. This study required an understanding of the reasons for the existence of variations in the performance standards of the festivals therefore researchers collected data using qualitative method of research. The method was used through acquiring opinions of the different stakeholders and analysing it against the different data that we had. The stakeholders include among others, Kampala Archdiocesan Music Committee (KAMUCO) parish leaders, parish choirs, music directors, audience, sponsors, and hired musicians who were selected using simple random, purposive and volunteer sampling techniques. The researchers also employed a variety of tools which include; interviews, participant and direct observation, focus group discussions, questionnaires and document analysis.

ItemThe impact of incorporating Kiganda traditional musical instruments into popular music performances in Kampala(Makerere University, 2021-03) Iman, NuludinThis study addressed the impact of incorporating Kiganda traditional musical instruments into popular music performances in Kampala. It was driven by the need to find out how, when, what and why there is a fusion of Kiganda traditional musical instruments into popular music performance. In addition, the study examined the role of the musicians, producers and how the fused music product is received by the consumers, and also sought to account for the absence of fusion in some cases. The traditional Kiganda musical instruments have suffered over the years from dominance by the western music, which among other reasons was partly caused by the colonial mentality of everything Ugandan being below in status to anything European. Other reasons include improvement in technology, foreign influence and inadequate exposure of the traditional instruments. The researcher carried out a qualitative study, with fieldwork in Kampala that involved tools such as; interviews, observation, participant observation, documentary analysis and literature review, as well as attending performances that involved fusion of traditional instruments and popular music. Furthermore, the researcher used the internet to gather various information concerning, the current study through the various search engines as well as photography to capture important moments for the study. The research established that musicians, producers and the audience have little knowledge concerning Kiganda traditional music instruments, for example, differentiating them by name, functioning, and even their physical appearance. Also, musicians who fuse Kiganda musical instruments and popular music are those that have attained a certain level of music literacy and training, including the academic and practical side of the music. The researcher concluded that fusion of these musical instruments has not had much impact on the popular music industry of Kampala and very little effort has been invested in making fusion more popular and successful in the music industry. The number of musicians involved in the fusion are those that are not so much popular in the music industry and the big names in the industry that endeavor to fuse the two strands do it once in a while because it is not their point of interest. Also, the government has not done much to invest in the music industry and also promote culture which has elements like the Kiganda traditional music instruments.

ItemThe Impact of Kampala Archdiocesan Music, Dance and Drama Festivals for Primary Schools on Pupils and Schools(Makerere University, 2021-03-31) Kambugu, AnthonyThis study addresses the impact of Kampala Archdiocesan Music, Dance and Drama Festivals for primary schools, on the pupils who participate in these festivals on the one hand, on the participating Catholic Church founded schools on the other hand. The festival is designed for those Church founded primary schools within and around Kampala, found in central part of Uganda. The background of the festival, plus the people who pioneered its establishment, are also inclusive in this research. Data was obtained by carrying out a qualitative study from different deaneries which make up Kampala Archdiocese. The research tools applied in data collection include interviews, observation, photography, audio and visual recording; documentary review, workshops, and auto-ethnography were also used in attaining data. These tools were very useful in attaining the data because they were the most appropriate since they allowed the researcher to reach out to the informants to find out their different experiences. A number of stake holders were interviewed and they include the organizers, head teachers, pupils and others. The study established that, the Kampala Archdiocesan music festivals have a great impact on both the pupils and their schools which participate in the festivals. Evangelization of the Catholic catechism from the grass root, inculcation of the Catholic values in schools and nurturing of pupils’ talents and skills were among the major issues discovered by this research. It was also noted that, through these festivals the participating schools identify themselves as Catholic founded schools, which also helps them to advertise themselves, which attracts more pupils to join these schools. This study therefore concludes that, the Kampala Archdiocese established music, dance and drama festivals in schools as one of the avenues to strengthen Catholic values and culture in its founded schools.

ItemSituating the Sangoan Techno-Complex into the Stone Age context at Sango Bay, Southern Uganda(Makerere University, 2022) Ssemulende, RobertThe position of the Sangoan industry in the Stone Age nomenclature generated heated debates arising from its stratigraphic composition. This study purposed to situate the Sangoan techno complex into Stone Age nomenclature at Sango Bay, the type site of the Sangoan lithic industry located in southern Uganda. Situating the Sangoan entailed examining if the Sangoan techno-complex was Acheulean, Middle Stone Age or an independent Stone Age industry. Three specific objectives guided the study that were: (a) To examine the typological and technological characteristics of the Sangoan lithic industry; (b)To investigate the environmental conditions under which the Sangoan existed and (c) To establish the chronological sequence of the Sangoan industry. The study utilised a multidisciplinary approach that entailed using archaeological, historical and paleoenvironmental sources. Archaeological data collected from archaeological surveys and the four excavation units formed the principal primary data in addition to the archives and oral interviews. The latter was key informant interviews utilised to identify the sites and provide information for documenting the history of Sango Bay and interpretation of the archaeological and cultural materials. Paleoenvironmental proxy data using fossil and contemporary plant phytoliths was used to examine the environmental characteristics of the Sangoan. This study is significant because it addresses Stone Age nomenclature and the chronological sequence gaps that are still problematic in Uganda and the world over. The results suggest that heavy-duty and light-duty tools characterised the Sangoan typology dismissing the traditional view of the Sangoan as predominantly heavy-duty since the light-duty tools dominated the Sango Bay. Technologically the Sangoan predominantly employed the Levallois technology, which entailed the preparation of the platform to produce flakes of a predetermined size. The size, amount of cortex, and nature of the Sangoan tools depended greatly on the environment, behavioural characteristics, and availability of raw materials. Chronologically using relative dating through stratigraphy, the Sangoan was an Early Middle Stone Age. Nevertheless, the absolute dates using the Optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating method indicated that the Sangoan dates range from 12500 ± 1000 to 9600 ± 600 years, implying that the Sangoan flourished during the terminal Pleistocene period characterised by the Later Stone Age. In terms of environment, the Sangoan inhabited woodlands punctuated with fire regimes and human activities with intervals of aridity. In conclusion, the Sangoan was neither Acheulean nor Middle Stone Age and not even an independent industry but a post-Acheulean techno-complex with traces of the LSA.

ItemContribution of the Department of Performing Arts and Film, Makerere University towards the development of the Uganda Police Force Band(Makerere University, 2022) Andeoye, EricThis study addresses the contribution of the department of Preforming Arts and Film, Makerere University, to the development of the Uganda Police Force (UPF) Band. To do this, the researcher identified the alumni of PAF who work with UPF, especially the Band, to examine their contributions towards the development of this band. I used a qualitative research methodology for data collection. In employing this methodology, I interacted with my respondents to share their experiences and views about this topic. This methodology demanded that I use interviewing, recording, participant observation and documentary analysis to gather data. This study established that PAF has contributed immensely towards the development of UPF Band. This contribution can be seen through the training of officers in music theory and practicals, which they apply during the Band’s performances. The officers also acquire leadership skills, as they interact with fellow students and lecturers, which they have transferred into the Band. Therefore, to understand how the UPF Band has developed, one needs to put into consideration the contribution of different stakeholders.
