Abstract
The research was carried out in order to identify the factors that cause traffic congestion with
in Kampala city with the case study being Sir Apollo Kagwa Road. Some of the main objectives
of the study were to find out the existing situation of traffic flow along Sir Apollo Kagwa Road,
causes of traffic congestion along the area of study and the mitigation measures that can be
undertaken to curb traffic congestion along Sir Apollo Kagwa Road.
Traffic congestion poses a persistent and escalating challenge in urban environments,
impacting both economic vitality and quality of life. This dissertation investigates the
multifaceted factors contributing to traffic congestion, aiming to provide a holistic
understanding of this complex phenomenon. Through a synthesis of quantitative analysis,
qualitative research, and urban planning principles, this study examines the interplay of various
causes, including infrastructure deficiencies, population density, transportation policies,
behavioral patterns, and technological influences.
The research employs a mixed-methods approach, integrating data-driven analyses with
stakeholder interviews and case studies across diverse urban settings. By identifying the
interconnected dynamics between land use planning, transportation networks, and societal
behaviors, this dissertation aims to delineate the intricate web of influences exacerbating traffic
congestion. Additionally, the study delves into the impacts of emerging technologies, such as
ride-sharing services, autonomous vehicles, and smart traffic management systems, on traffic
patterns and congestion mitigation strategies.
Various methods were used to collect data and gather information concerning the topic for
dissertation. These included generating questionnaires for interviewing different kinds of
people, literature review.
In the findings, it was found out that traffic congestion exists and is a major challenge faced by
the road users and the people staying along Sir Apollo Kagwa road. Among the major causes
of traffic congestion was rush hours of morning and evening, traffic congestion hot spots like
junctions for example at Bwaise and Makerere Western Gate.
The findings illuminate the nuanced relationships between urban development, transportation
systems, and human behaviors, offering insights crucial for policymakers, urban planners, and
transportation authorities. Ultimately, this research underscores the necessity for
comprehensive, multi-dimensional solutions that address the root causes of traffic congestion, fostering sustainable and efficient urban mobility in the face of burgeoning populations and
evolving societal needs.
Some recommendations were also put forward from this research and they include improving
and enlarging of the road infrastructure so as to accommodate a large number of vehicles,
improving public transport in order to reduce on over dependency on private cars, introduction
of a modern railway system and law enforcement on roads should all be put into place to reduce
on the burden of traffic congestion.
This dissertation was presented in five chapters. Chapter one covered the introduction and
background of the study, chapter 2 covered literature review, chapter 3 covered research
methodology, chapter 4 included the research or field findings and finally chapter five
consisted of the conclusion and recommendations.
