Abstract

Image editing refers to the process of altering or manipulating images using software tools or techniques. It has evolved significantly since the dawn of photography. From the early days of the Daguerreotype to the digital era, photo manipulation was largely the domain of vainglorious dictators and media conglomerates. It required considerable resources to hire airbrushing professionals, including access to darkrooms, chemicals, and specialized skills to alter images by hand (Gómez Cruz & Meyer, 2012). The advent of new technology has dramatically lowered these barriers, making photo manipulation common.. This study aims to investigate the relationship between image editing skills and the overall quality of work produced by photography students at Mtisfa in Makerere University. By understanding this connection, we can gain valuable insights into how image editing skills can contribute to the success and development of aspiring photography students One of the primary purposes of image editing is to enhance the visual appeal of a photograph or artwork. This can be achieved by adjusting various aspects of the image, including brightness, contrast, saturation, and color balance. These adjustments can help bring out the details, improve the overall composition, and create a desired mood or atmosphere. It also involves removing imperfections or blemishes from the image, such as dust particles, scratches, or unwanted objects. Retouching can also include cosmetic changes, such as smoothing out skin tones, whitening teeth, or reducing the appearance of wrinkles. Image editing software often provides advanced features that allow for more complex edits. For example, one can use layers to combine multiple images or elements, creating composite artworks or adding special effects. Tools such as filters, masks, and blending modes offer further creative possibilities, enabling users to achieve unique and stylized looks. Image editing plays a crucial role in the field of photo restoration. Old or damaged photographs can be scanned and digitally restored, bringing back lost detail and preserving cherished memories for future generations.
