Abstract
Curricular Adaptation and Institutional Response to music and art at MTSIFA
The Margaret Trowel School of Industrial and Fine Art (MTSIFA) has a unique opportunity
to lead the way in integrating music and art within its curriculum and institutional response.
Here's how MTSIFA can leverage its strengths and adapt to the evolving needs of artistic
expression:
Curricular Adaptations: Building upon existing strengths: MTSIFA already incorporates
music in various forms, including curated gallery playlists, student music clubs, and
interdisciplinary projects. Expanding these initiatives and creating dedicated music courses or
workshops can further enrich the student experience. Inter disciplinary learning
opportunities: MTSIFA can develop interdisciplinary courses that combine visual art with
music theory, composition, performance, or sound technology. This can involve collaborative
projects, guest lectures, or field trips that expose students to diverse artistic perspectives.
Technology integration: MTSIFA can utilize technology to create interactive sound
installations, incorporate digital music production software into its curriculum, and encourage
students to explore the potential of music visualization. Celebrating cultural
diversity: MTSIFA can integrate traditional African music and instruments into its
curriculum, organize workshops with local musicians, and invite international artists to share
their expertise. This would foster a deeper understanding of diverse musical traditions and
promote intercultural dialogue. Developing critical thinking skills: MTSIFA can encourage
students to analyse the role of music in different contexts, such as advertising, film, and
social movements. This will help students develop critical thinking skills and become more
informed consumers of art and media.
