Abstract
By investigating into the self help housing and planning strategies of slum dwellers, the reasons as to why and how the self help buildings come up, were drawn. Different building strategies slum dwellers use, in coming up with their dwellings were investigated, description of the quality of spaces created by self help builders and their effects on the dwellers were described. Guiding principles required towards the implementation of the self-help bulidings were recommended. Architectural designs were revised in order to ease access to infrastructures and services in slums by slum dwellers. Therefore, after understanding the self-help building and the planning strategies, it was discovered that sustainable building strategies, can help in designing an appropriate tenure system for slums so as to improve the living conditions of the dwellers.
