Abstract
This study assessed the impact of land evictions on urban livelihoods in Lusanja, Wakiso District, with particular attention to the socio-economic and legal implications for affected populations. A mixed-methods research design was employed, incorporating both quantitative and qualitative approaches. Data were collected from 120 households through structured questionnaires, complemented by 15 key informant interviews with local leaders, evictees, and government officials, as well as direct field observations. Findings revealed that 76% of respondents experienced a loss of income due to eviction, while 68% reported that their children’s education was disrupted. Additionally, 61% indicated reduced access to healthcare services. Women, children, and other vulnerable groups were disproportionately affected, with only 18% of respondents reporting access to any form of legal aid. The study also identified systemic weaknesses in land governance, including ambiguous land tenure systems, weak enforcement of land laws, and inadequate legal protections. Government-led resettlement initiatives were found to be largely ineffective, with only 24% of affected households receiving any formal assistance or alternative shelter. Despite these challenges, the study observed the emergence of community-based coping strategies, including informal savings groups, temporary housing arrangements, and collective food-sharing mechanisms. The study concludes that unregulated land evictions significantly undermine urban resilience, social stability, and human security. It recommends the strengthening of land governance structures, enhanced legal protections for vulnerable populations, and the implementation of inclusive and participatory resettlement policies aimed at securing sustainable urban livelihoods.
