Factors affecting the success of youth livelihood programs in Uganda: a case study of Kira Municipal Council in Nakawa Division Wakiso District

Abstract

This study sought to assess the factors affecting the success of youth livelihood programs in Uganda. The study also aimed at exploring the challenges faced by the youth in accessing and utilization of the youth livelihood programs in Wakiso district and make recommendations. This study used a cross sectional research design. The sample size of the study was 118 and a response rate of 100% was attained. Data was collected using structured questionnaire which was directly administered. Data was analyzed using STATA 15 where frequencies, descriptive statistics and chi square analysis were used to analyze data. The significance of the association between the variables of interest was tested at 5% level of significance. This study found out that there is a significant association between level of education of a respondent and success of YLP. This study established that the following are the challenges faced; High budget cuts, delays in the disbursement of requested funds, excessive paperwork in requesting for the youth livelihood funds, insufficient trainings for the enterprises being implemented, no involvement of the youth before implementation of the program and no feasibility studies done before implementation of the program to ascertain its success. This study recommends that government should ensure that the youths engaged in the YLP at least should have a minimum level of education being primary level. The government should also ensure that the amount of money disbursed to youths is timely and the government should also endeavor to release the exact amount of money requested by the youths.
