It serves as an important coping mechanism that helps students manage stress and emotional challenges while also promoting self-expression and social interaction. The findings further demonstrate that music contributes significantly to the formation of youth identity through fashion, language, values, and social behavior. Music has become an integral aspect of university culture, providing students with opportunities for creativity, cultural expression, and social integration. Although music offers numerous benefits, the study concludes that its influence is not entirely positive. The effects of music depend largely on the type of content consumed and the extent of students’ engagement with music-related activities. When used responsibly, music enhances academic performance, emotional well-being, and social cohesion. However, excessive involvement in music entertainment activities may negatively affect students’ academic responsibilities and personal conduct. Overall, the study concludes that music remains a powerful cultural force that shapes youth experiences and contributes significantly to the development of university students at Makerere University.
