Slum upgrading and it’s associated challenges in Kampala city. A case study: Katanga

Abstract

The study was for a dissertation for an award of Bachelors Degree of Urban and Regional Planning at Makerere University. It looked at slum upgrading and its associated challenges, it aimed at mapping stakeholders involved in upgrading of the area, looked at examining the process and approaches used in slum upgrading of Katanga looked at investigating the basic slum upgrading principles applied in Katanga, assessing the challenges faced in upgrading of Katanga and also looked at finding out slum upgrading strategic interventions. This can be achieved through qualitative and quantitative data which involves; use of questionnaires, interview guide, observation, photography, literature review, coding, tabulation and computation. These helped me to know the stakeholders involved in the in the upgrading of Katanga that is to say; central government, private sector, residents, CBOs, NGOs. It also helped me to know the slum upgrading process and approaches used in the upgrading of Katanga, slum upgrading principles, the challenges associated with upgrading of the area, the strategic interventions that have been conducted to handle the challenges associated with upgrading of Katanga. For upgrading of the area to be successful, Katanga has to be included in the city’s planning and also looking at all possible measures to make Katanga a self-contained area in different designs of Kampala city. All stakeholders involved in the upgrading of the area should also be brought on the board for successful upgrading of Katanga.
