Assessing the factors associated with household food insecurity in central Equatoria state of South Sudan: a case study Juba city

Abstract

Household food insecurity remains a critical issue in Central Equatoria State of South Sudan, exacerbated by the region's prolonged conflict, economic instability, and other macro factors. This study aims to assess the factors associated with household food insecurity focussing on demographic, economic and social factors. The study employed cluster sampling where data was collected from 109 respondents from Juba city of South Sudan. Analyses revealed that demographic factors specifically age of the household head and household size significantly influenced household food insecurity. Younger household heads were more affected by food insecurity than the older household heads. Furthermore, larger household sizes were found to be associated with household food insecurity since they ate few meals per day compared to small-sized households. In conclusion, the report underscores the complex interplay of the factors associated with household food insecurity in Central Equatoria state. To mitigate food insecurity and the factors associated with it, proper family planning methods should be adopted, early and child marriages should be abolished by the government, job creation initiatives should be set up and public education facilities should also be set up so as to increase the literacy levels.
